Nine times out of ten, the boring choice is the correct one \u2014 and the tenth time is usually a rationalisation, not an exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/picsum.photos\/seed\/tech-boring-1\/1200\/700\" alt=\"An old but well-maintained server rack alongside modern equipment\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Novelty has a cost nobody puts on the invoice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New tools come with unknown failure modes, thin documentation, and a support community that&#8217;s still figuring things out alongside you. None of that shows up in a benchmark. All of it shows up at 2am during an incident, when the boring tool would have had five Stack Overflow answers and the exciting one has none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t an argument against ever adopting anything new \u2014 it&#8217;s an argument for spending your &#8220;innovation budget&#8221; deliberately, on the one or two bets that actually matter to your product, instead of on every layer of the stack at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A rough rule of thumb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it&#8217;s not core to what makes your product different, choose the boring, well-documented option<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Adopt new technology for the problem you actually have, not the one you might have someday<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Budget one genuinely new bet per project, not one per developer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boring technology means being able to reason about how it breaks.
