Everything else was left open for wrong turns, long lunches and whatever the person at the next table recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/picsum.photos\/seed\/travel-portugal-1\/1200\/700\" alt=\"Narrow cobbled street in a hillside town in northern Portugal\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Porto, unhurried<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Porto rewards exactly this kind of trip. The riverside is postcard-pretty and worth the twenty minutes it takes to see, but the city&#8217;s better moments happened two streets back \u2014 a tiled stairwell nobody photographs, a tasca with four tables and no menu, just whatever the owner&#8217;s mother cooked that morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stayed in Cedofeita, close enough to walk everywhere and far enough that the street outside was quiet by ten. If you&#8217;re picking a neighbourhood on a first visit, that trade-off is worth making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inland, where the pace actually changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real shift happened once we left the coast for the Douro valley. Terraced vineyards stack up impossibly steep hillsides, and the towns in between run on a schedule that has nothing to do with tourists. Shops close for three hours at lunch. Nobody apologises for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the train from Porto to Pinh\u00e3o at least once \u2014 the river views from the window are better than anything you&#8217;ll get from a car<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Book quinta tastings a day ahead in shoulder season; walk-ins work in winter, not in summer<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Bring cash for the smaller towns \u2014 several places still don&#8217;t take cards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We didn&#8217;t see everything the guidebook listed, and it was the best trip we&#8217;ve taken in years.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re building an itinerary, resist the urge to fill it.
